Senior Officials Meeting of Non-Aligned Movement kicks off in Baku

Baku, April 3, AZERTAC A Senior Officials Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has kicked off in Baku as part of the preparation process for the NAM Mid-Term Ministerial Conference scheduled for April 5-6. In his opening remarks, chair of the meeting Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Ruben Dario Molina described the Non-Aligned Movement as a good platform in terms of strengthening existing political ties, which embraces the UN sustainable development goals. "Since the Movement creates good opportunities for addressing the challenges different countries are facing today, this also makes NAM the most important platform of multicultural movement," he added. The Permanent Representative to the UN Yashar Aliyev is representing Azerbaijan at the Conference. The NAM Mid-Term Intermediate Ministerial Conference will be held in Baku on April 5-6 under the theme of “Promoting International Peace and Security for Sustainable Development”. NAM participating states, representatives of the observer states and international organizations, as well as countries and institutions invited as special guests will take part in the Mid-Term Ministerial Conference. The NAM, which plays an important role in maintenance of the international peace and security, includes 120 states. 17 state and 10 international organizations have an observer status. In 2011, Azerbaijan joined the movement at the 16th Ministerial Conference held in Bali. In 2019, Azerbaijan will host the 18th Summit of the NAM and will chair the movement in 2019-2022.
