Seoul expects Moscow to play constructive role in Korean settlement - ambassador

Seoul expects Moscow to continue playing a constructive role in the effort to normalize situation on the Korean Peninsula, South Korean Ambassador to Moscow Woo Yoon-keun told reporters on Monday. "The government of the Republic of Korea will keep boosting the strategic dialogue with the Russian side as part of the process to solve the North Korean issue," he said. "We expect Russia to continue playing a constructive role." "Russia supports the inter-Korean dialogue and highly appreciates the Republic of Korea’s efforts to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula, including agreements to hold the inter-Korean summit and the North Korean-US summit," the diplomat said. According to Woo, the Russian side "is always ready to make efforts to reach peace on the Korean Peninsula and stability in North-East Asia." A South Korean delegation visited Pyongyang in early March to be received by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. It was agreed to hold an inter-Korean summit at the end of April. During a visit to Washington later South Korea’s national security director Chung Eui-yong conveyed a verbal message from Kim Jong Un to US President Donald Trump with a proposal for a bilateral summit.
