Sextet discusses reviewing sanctions regime against Iran - Russia’s UN ambassador

UNITED NATIONS, March 25. /TASS/. The Sextet (Russia, US, UK, France, China and Germany) and Iran are discussing "specific parameters" of reviewing the sanctions regime against Tehran, Russian Ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin said on Tuesday. "Reaching an agreement [on Iranian nuclear program] and implementation of expected agreements will require detailed review of the current sanctions regime [against Iran]," Churkin said at the Un Security Council session devoted to Iranian nuclear dossier. "The discussion of specific parameters is currently held in the format Sextet plus Iran," he added. Churkin also drew attention to "another aspect of this problem." "Several UN members, wrongly interpreting the sanctions [imposed] by UN Security Council, introduced additional unilateral restrictions outside [of UN sanctions] that are not based on international law. I confirm that we consider this practice unacceptable," the diplomat stressed. Russia will do everything possible "for final and comprehensive closure of all issues connected with Iranian nuclear program" and "for lifting sanctions from Tehran that were imposed by corresponding UN Security Council resolutions," Churkin said. The next round of negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program will start on March 26 in Switzerland’s Lausanne. Churkin urged all sides "to facilitate progress toward reaching a final agreements." "It is important to agree on a deal that will include all basis principles. Parameters of implementation will later be subject of technical consultations and developments. We cannot miss this chance," the diplomat stressed. At a meeting in Vienna in late November 2014, Sextet and Tehran agreed to extend the deadline for an agreement in the talks on Iran’s nuclear program to late June 2015. The main political decisions are expected to be reached by late March. Read more
