S.Leader Pardons, Commutes Prison Terms Of Group Of Inmates

Tehran, Aug 21, IRNA - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei here on Tuesday pardoned or commuted prison terms of a number of inmates on the occasion of Eid ul-Fitr. The Supreme Leader's decision was made in response to a letter from Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani asking for clemency for the remaining jail terms and financial penalties of prisoners. These prisoners had been sentenced by the public, Islamic Revolution and military courts and the special court examining charges about profiteering. Ayatollah Khamenei granted the amnesty on the occasion of Eid ul-Fitr which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured./end
