Some Western countries seeking to revise existing system of int’l relations - Russian upper house speaker

MOSCOW, June 7. /TASS/. Tensions in the world are triggered by attempts of some Western countries to revise the system of international relations each time it hinders them to reach their goals, speaker of Russia’s upper parliament house, the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko said in an article "The BRICS: An Outline of a Fair World Order" dedicated to the first BRICS parliamentary forum opening in Moscow on Monday. "We often hear some politicians and experts as saying that the existing world order system that was formed after World War II has weakened," she said. "There are grounds to think so: the international situation is changing dynamically, with various tendencies springing up, including those that demonstrate the lack of efficiency of the current system of international relations." But Russia, according to Matviyenko, has a "clear position" on that matter. "The existing system of international security and stability needs to be adjusted to the new realities," she said. "However we don’t think it has exhausted itself." "The United Nations, its Security Council and other international institutions, international law which underlie this system have enough potential to direct the humankind’s development to a positive track, to make the world safer, more stable and prosperous," she underscored. The problem, according to Matviyenko, is that "a number of states which are seeking dominance" are blocking the implementation of the possibilities of the existing system of international relations and its improvement. "When the existing system of international relations, international law do not allow the West to attain its goals, it is immediately declared obsolete and subject to removal," she said, adding that it was the "key cause of growing tension and instability in the world." So, in his words, the BRICS, or an association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is seen as a response to this "global challenge." "The BRICS came into existence as certain format for cooperation between five countries which have a common agenda. That is: defending their sovereignty, protecting and promoting their national interests on the principles of equal rights, non-interference into each other’s domestic affairs and non-acceptance of unipolar world," Matviyenko stressed.
