South Korea to continue facilitating dialogue between US, North Korea - ambassador

MOSCOW, March 12. /TASS/. Seoul will continue to act as a mediator, facilitating dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang, South Korean Ambassador to Russia Woo Yoon-keun said in an interview with Russian news outlets. "Over the past two years, the South Korean government has been actively acting as a mediator, trying to arrange contacts between the United States and North Korea, and it will continue efforts to build dialogue," the ambassador noted. "I would like to point out that the goal is to ensure full and irreversible denuclearization and establish sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula," he added. The ambassador emphasized that Seoul had actively facilitated a meeting between high-ranking officials from South Korea, North Korea and the United States that took place in the Swedish capital of Stockholm in January 2019. According to him, the meeting can be described as "a historic event that took place for the first time during the 30-year-long talks on the North Korean nuclear issue." Denuclearization is key to progress in resolving major issues the region is facing, Woo Yoon-keun said. "If full and irreversible denuclearization takes place and the international community reaches consensus on the matter, then discussions of other issues may being, which will include the easing of sanctions against North Korea," he explained. "As for resuming the six-party talks, it will depend on progress in the denuclearization process. In the future, the possibility of resuming dialogues on various platforms may be discussed, which would involve the South, the North, the United States, China and Russia," the South Korean ambassador said.
