Southern peace dialogue makes good start: Thai official

BANGKOK, September 2 (TNA) -- The government's recent southern peace talk with representatives of insurgency groups made a good start athough no conclusion, said Anusit Kunakorn, secretary-general of the National Security Council. In the wake of the talk with the Pattani Syura Council or Mara Patani in Malaysia, Mr Anusit said some proposals from the group matched what the government was doing. He referred to the proposals for the government to handle the peace process as a national agenda and secure areas to facilitate peace talks. In response to the request for the government to recognize the Mara Patani group, Mr Anusit said the government considered them as Thai people and was working out solutions to restore peace in the far South and allow them to return to Thailand and be part of the Thai society. In their two-day peace talk with Thai authorities in Kuala Lumpur in late August, representatives of the Mara Patani group also demanded the Thai government grant immunity to its members. They insisted on their desire for autonomy. The group covers six southern insurgency movements namely the National Revolution Front, three parties in the Pattani Liberation Organisation, Pattani Islamic Mujahideen Movement and Islamic Liberation Front of Pattani.
