Syrian army operations in al Zabadani leaves heavy damage, opposition member says

ANKARA (A.A) - March 5, 2012 - Al Zabadani district of the Syrian capital, Damascus, has received its share from a violent crackdown led by the Assad regime as army operations inflicted heavy damage to a vast number of buildings, levelling many of them. "The district was hit by heavy weapons and most of the houses were severely damaged or totally destroyed. Many houses were set ablaze by rockets and many people were seriously wounded in fires," a 21-year-old opposition member who asked for anonymity for security reasons told the Anadolu Agency. The opposition member said people were not allowed to take their wounded relatives to hospitals, adding that they were secretly treated in make-shift clinics in houses. "There are unexploded hand grenades in our homes, which obviously poses a great threat. There is a tragedy in each house. The situation in Al Zabadani is no different from Baba Amr. We are cut off from basic needs and diesel fuel," the opposition member said.   The opposition member also defied last week's voting for a new constitution in the country, saying the government manipulated the results of the referendum. "It was a voting where there was no international observer. We know as a fact that regime loyalists were allowed to cast multiple votes at different ballot boxes," the opposition member said.
