Syrian opposition ready for dialog with Syria’s Assad - Astana negotiation participants

ASTANA, May 28. /TASS/. The Syrian opposition is ready for dialog with the regime of Bashar al-Assad to settle the crisis in Syria, representative of the Kurdish movement Nabi Sarbast said after negotiations in the capital of Kazakhstan on Thursday. "If we look realistically, we can’t ignore the regime not only politically but also because it represents a social layer in Syria today," the representative said. "Possibly, during a certain period Bashar al-Assad will temporarily be one of the parties to the dialog as was discussed at the Moscow platform and this is seen as logical. But we’re aimed at the radical change of the regime because its presence has led to destructions," he said. Another participant in the Astana talks, human rights activist Ammar Abdul Hamid, shared this opinion. ‘We can’t ignore the existence of the regime, if we want a political solution to the crisis." Leader of the Syrian Movement for a Pluralistic Society Randa Kassis said all the participants in the negotiations held in Astana "agreed to meet again in Kazakhstan." "We decided that we should meet every two-three months and so Astana-2 talks will take place after a certain time interval," she said. The negotiations of the Syrian opposition started in the capital of Kazakhstan on May 25 and were held for three days behind closed doors. A total of about Syrian oppositionists took part in the negotiations. Syria’s Ambassador to Russia Riad Haddad told TASS news agency on Thursday that Damascus did not want to change the Moscow format of the inter-Syrian consultations. "We’re trying and taking all efforts, political and diplomatic, to agree on the Moscow-3 talks. We don’t want to go beyond the Moscow forum and do not want to go either to Kazakhstan or elsewhere," the ambassador said. Read more
