Syrian president being punished for resistance against Israel:Iran`s Velayati

TEHRAN,Sept.26(MNA) – Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, said that resisting against the Zionist regime and being an ally of Iran are the main charges leveled against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Velayati, who is the director of the Permanent Secretariat of the World Assembly of the Islamic Awakening, made the remarks during a meeting with a Syrian parliamentary delegation in Tehran on Tuesday. “We believe that the Syrian people and government have been undergoing an important test,” he said, adding that the conspiracies against Syria got nowhere through the determination of the people and government of the country. He went on to say that Syria is stronger than ever and the territorial integrity of the country has been preserved. The developments in the country are supported by certain Western countries headed by the United States and the Zionist regime, Velayati said. He emphasized that the coincidence of the developments in Syria and the Islamic Awakening in the region signifies the West’s discontent with the regional developments. If Syria, which is the main link in the chain of the resistance movement, is eliminated, the chain will be broken, said Velayati, a former foreign minister. No country has the right to interfere in Syria’s internal affairs under the pretext of supporting the country’s people, he noted. Elsewhere in his remarks, Velayati expressed hope that the Syrian government would continue to implement reforms in the country.
