Tartu University expresses regret over recent visit of its students to Nagorno-Karabakh

Baku, June 2, AZERTAC Rector of the Estonian Tartu University Volli Kalm has expressed regret over the fact that a group of students of the university visited Azerbaijan`s Armenia-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region. In a letter to Azerbaijani Ambassador in Estonia Tofig Zulfugarov, the rector said: “On behalf of the University of Tartu, I regret if the recent visit of our student group to Nagorno-Karabakh has caused misunderstandings in our relations. The aims of the visit were purely educational and it was not politically motivated in any way. Moreover, the group was unaware of such consequences of visiting Nagorno Karabakh without the approval of the relevant state bodies of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The University will endeavor to avoid such incidents in the future.” He said: “I would like to reiterate that the University of Tartu respects fully the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within its internationally recognized borders and remains committed to this principle.”
