Tehran NAM summit closes

TEHRAN,Sep.1(MNA) – The XVI Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was brought to a close in Tehran on Friday. The summit meetings were held at three levels. Senior officials’ meetings were held on Sunday and Monday. The NAM foreign ministerial meetings convened on Tuesday and Wednesday. And the NAM summit of the heads of state and government was held on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi handed over the three-year rotating presidency of the movement to Iran. Several documents and statements were ratified by the participants at the end of Friday’s meeting. However, their details were not available until the Tehran Times press time. The documents and statements had been drawn up and ratified during the NAM meetings of senior officials and foreign ministers. Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh, the secretary general of the senior officials’ meetings, on Monday briefed reporters on the content of a document drafted by the participants during the meetings on Sunday and Monday. According to him, the continuation of the occupation of the Palestinian territories, terrorism, particularly state terrorism, disrespect of religions, and unilateral economic sanctions had been condemned in the draft document. And non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, opposition to unilateralism, and the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy were among the issues that had been emphasized in the draft document.
