Thai cabinet, NCPO may decide on charter referendum on May 19

BANGKOK, May 5 (TNA) – Thailand’s Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana said the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and the cabinet would meet on May 19 and they could discuss the draft constitution and a referendum. Suwaphan said that ministers were studying the draft charter of the Drafting Committee and would send their opinions to Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krua-ngam by May 14. He noted that the interim constitution governing the kingdom currently does not require a referendum to be held on the new constitution. However, Suwaphan said the aim of the new constitution was to ensure national progress and solidarity, especially through continuing reforms over the next 3-5 years. (TNA)
