Thai Draft Charter Committee Optimistic On Upcoming Vote

BANGKOK, August 30 (TNA) - Despite ongoing political sentiments that oppose the draft constitution, Manit Suksomjit, vice chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC), says he is optimistic the draft charter will be approved by the National Reform Council and eventually sail through public referendum. Manit said members of the CDC had anticipated a possible increase in political activity ahead of the September 6 vote on the new constitution, even among political parties, but were confident the new set of laws would garner sufficient approval in the vote as it was written to benefit the public. Manit said a sub-committee had also been tasked to conduct a study on 13 organic laws within the draft charter, including at least six articles concerning elections and political parties, which must be finalized soonest should the charter pass the September vote and following referendum.
