Thai Foreign Minister: No countries have problems with Section 44

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) - Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn says the international community is aware of Section 44 under the interim constitution and welcomes the lifting of the martial law in the kingdom. General Tanasak said foreign diplomats, journalists and international organizations, the international community had welcome progress in this transition period. Only a few raised questions about Section 44. He said the world understood Thailand’s situation and its international relations remained good as usual. "Criticisms on the issue are baseless. It depends on different stances. People who understand speak positively about it. Prejudiced people are trying to criticize without information. However, fewer criticisms were heard after the martial law was lifted as the international community wanted," General Tanasak said. He insisted that Section 44 was a tool for political transition where normal instruments could not work, saying legislative, executive and judicial powers continued to function. The prime minister would only use Section 44 in some areas necessary. Regarding growing concern over human rights issues, General Tanasak said the government was ready to explain and discuss on Section 44 to the world. (TNA)
