Thai govt warns of ramsomware attacks

BANGKOK, May 14 (TNA) – The Thai government has warned all internet users of ransomware cyber-attacks, which are currently spreading across the globe. The ransomware, called WannaCry, has reportedly spread aggressively hitting tens of thousands of personal computers globally for now. The PCs running the Microsoft Windows operating system are being targeted in particular. Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd, spokesman for the prime minister’s office, said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has received reports of the cyber-attacks from the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and urged the public to be careful while downloading any files from the internet. He noted that files on infected PCs will be locked up and held for ransom. “Users could be unaware of downloading malware worms into their computers,” he said. “The infected files will be inaccessible and PC users will be asked to pay ransoms to unlock them.” Nonetheless, the spokesman added that the prime minister has instructed the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to monitor the malware spread in Thailand closely and provide the public with protection guidelines as soon as possible.
