Thai private sector ready to oppose corruption

BANGKOK, September 6 (TNA) - Thailand’s private sector on Sunday which coincides with the National Anti-Corruption Day said it is prepared to move against every form of malpractices in the kingdom. Representatives of the private sector which included MCOT Public Co., Ltd. and other firms listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) gathered at Bangkok’s major shopping mall and made the announcement on the move which is in line with the government’s major policies. Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul told the participants that the government has a policy in opposing every form of corruption as well as work faster and reduce duplication in the operation. In tourism industry, said Mrs. Kobkarn, the government’s attempts to rid corruption problem have improved the country’s image in the eyes of international community. She said the August 17 central Bangkok bombing at Ratchaprasong intersection would impact the tourism business and hoped that the industry would become lively again next month. The ministry is optimistic that the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand this year would be 28.8 million persons and the country would earn 2.2 trillion baht, meeting the target. Kesara Manchusree, president of the SET, said the SET has been concentrating on making more than 600 listed firms to conduct businesses with good governance since the past 13 years and firms in Thailand have been considered performing best good governance for three years in a row in this region. Mrs. Kesara said the SET would continue to push listed firms to operate with honesty and transparency. (TNA)
