Thailand brushes aside EU statement on rights abuses

BANGKOK, Oct 10 (TNA) -- Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon brushed aside European Union (EU) Parliament's critical remarks against the Thai government. Gen Prawit said the government had clearly explained the process of plan to return to fully democrcy country and the government is trying to restore democratic system in the country. The EU Parliament on Thursday condemned human rights abuses in Thailand and called on the military government to return the country to elected government. In a nonbinding resolution, the EU Parliament expressed concern over Thailand’s deteriorating human rights situation since the military seized power in May 2014 and issued specific calls, urging the country to “lift repressive restrictions on the right to liberty and the peaceful exercise of other human rights.” In countering the attack by EU, the Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a statement saying that Thailand is “disappointed by the Resolution, as it reflects an inaccurate understanding of the situation and developments in the country. Thailand is determined to promote and protect human rights, and strictly complies with its international human rights obligations, as well as committed to the implementation of the Roadmap towards general elections.” The ministry’s statement went on to say that the Resolution, however, encouraged the EU to engage in a constructive dialogue. The Resolution welcomed and expressed support to Thailand in several issues, such as the passage of the Gender Equality Act. It recognises Thailand’s commitment to eliminate human trafficking and tackle challenges in the fishery sector throughout the supply chain, and takes note of the appointment of a new Constitution Drafting Committee and the implementation of the clear plan for free and fair elections. The Resolution clearly welcomes Thailand’s new role as Country Coordinator for ASEAN - EU relations for 2015 – 2018, the statement said. Thailand stands ready to “consider recommendations that are constructive, balanced and based on accurate information. We are ready to cooperate with the EU in all aspects and at all levels, and to expedite all efforts as Country Coordinator for ASEAN – EU relations to promote closer ties between the two regions”, the statement by the Foreign Affairs Ministry added.
