Thailand reform council turns down charter draft

BANGKOK, September 6 (TNA) - Thailand’s National Reform Council (NRC) members on Sunday disapproved the new charter draft in a majority vote, allowing the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to appoint a new set of charter drafters. A total of 135 NRC members voted down the controversial draft, while 105 others voted in favour and seven others abstained. After vote results were published, Interior Minister General Anupong Paochinda told journalists the junta administration would move in line with the provisional constitution and new members of the charter drafting committee would be appointed to fill the void. The NCPO which seized power in Thailand following the May 22, 2014 bloodless coup would now have to appoint a maximum of 21 constitution legislators within 30 days and they would have to present a new constitution within 180 days. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha would also be required to appoint a maximum of 200 NRC members within 30 days to carryon work on national reforms. Separately, Pornsil Patcharintanakul, an adviser of the Board of Trade of Thailand, opined that private sector confidence would not fade from the charter vote because rumours of last-minute intense lobbying against the proposed draft had been anticipated.
