BAKU, August 8 /TASS/. The trilateral meeting of the presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran is a historical event, which will give a new impetus to regional cooperation, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev said in his speech at the trilateral summit of the presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran on Monday. "I am sure that today’s trilateral summit will give a new impetus to regional cooperation. Common history and geography unite our peoples who have been living side by side for centuries. Close bonds of friendship link Azerbaijan both with Iran and Russia. These relations have developed further in recent years and have been upgraded to the level of strategic partnership," Aliev said. Aliev also said that Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan successfully cooperated and supported each other within the framework of international organizations. The Azerbaijani leader noted that his country had always been against international sanctions imposed on Iran and Russia and had openly stated its stance. "Azerbaijan pursues an independent policy. This policy rests on international law, the principle of justice and our country’s national interests," Aliev added. Read more
