Turkey, model for Pakistan's considered reforms-Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD (AA) - May 3, 2012 - Imran Khan, a popular politician in Pakistan, has said he took Turkey as a model.  Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) chairman Imran Khan is a popular figure in the Pakistani politics. He believes that the only way to step out from the current situation in Pakistan is performing the 'Turkey model'.   He told the AA correspondent in capital Islamabad that his inspiration was Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and saving Pakistan from its current situation laid on carrying out the 'Turkey model'. Khan came together with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan in the beginning of April this year in Istanbul. Khan said, "Gul and Erdogan are actually the best leaders in the Islamic world. They are democratic and foresighted. They gave Turkey a new face and the world can see this change in Turkey. We are influenced by Turkish reforms in the past decade and would like to develop Pakistan once we are elected and follow Turkey's reforming steps." Imran Khan highlighted that Turkey faced big problems which are being faced by Pakistanis at the moment. He said that Turkey overcame its problems and became a regional power. Khan said, "Most of the Pakistanis want a change in the system and majority of them are supporting PTI." Khan said that there was not a well-functioning government system, which was the biggest problem in Pakistan. "Once there is not such a system, bribery and corruption come in. They interrupt the potential investments and break people's confidence in the government," Khan said.  He said that they have rich soil, underground resources and several mines and he believed that because of poor governance and bribery, Pakistan was in poverty.  Khan stated that with proper improvements and new projects Pakistan will become stronger. Khan said once he got elected, he wanted Pakistan to follow Turkish steps during the country's recovery and development. Pakistan has been dragged into terrorism in the past few years. In the past 10 years, 40 thousand people got killed and they suffered 10 billion USD loss. Most of the Pakistanis are not fundamentalist and they are against terrorism, Khan stated. PTI leader believed that governments built 'terrorism fashion' between Muslim groups in Pakistan which brings popularity towards Taliban and Al Qaeda. Imran Khan stated that once Pakistan freed itself from fighting against Taliban and Al Qaeda, support to fundamentalist groups will stop. He also believed that once they hold agreements with sectarian groups, security forces will be able to handle incidents all around the country.  Khan stressed that if NATO opens the supply routes, money will reach the country however, people will get killed and investments will stop. Pakistan is having its most debited period.  Imran Khan was born in 1952 and completed his higher education at Oxford University. He is a nationalist, conservative and against US politics. He is popular among younger voters of Pakistan.
