Turkey's EU minister hails move to reopen Greek elementary school in Aegean island

VILNIUS (A.A) - January 13, 2012 - Turkey's European Union Minister and Chief Negotiator for accession talks Egemen Bagis has said the Turkish government's decision to allow for the reopening of a Greek elementary school in the northeastern Aegean island of Gokceada showed the importance Turkey attached to humanitarian values.       "This is a sign of Turkey's diligence over human rights and humanitarian values. This is indeed a historic decision which I believe would be praised by not only by Greek citizens in Turkey but all others around the world. Greeks in Turkey are equal citizens of this country," Bagis told the Anadolu Agency in Vilnius, Lithuania.  Bagis said the Turkish government's move should also set an example for certain European countries who he said had been struggling "contradictions" as well as for Greece "which should take steps to solve problems faced by Muslim minorities and our Turkish brothers living in Western Thrace."
