Turkish premier says Turkey feels itself left in lurch by Germany

BERLIN (A.A) – November 2, 2011 – Turkey's prime minister said on Wednesday that Turkey felt itself left in the lurch by Germany. Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey had positive approaches to Germany, however it felt itself left in the lurch by Germany. "Almost 3 million Turks, 700,000 of whom are German citizens, are living in Germany. Of course, I prefer all 3 million Turks to have dual citizenship. Why shouldn't Germany do this when a European Union (EU) country like France can do it," Erdogan told German Bild newspaper in an exclusive interview. Erdogan said once workers in Germany, Turkish citizens had become employers, academicians and artists, and 72,000 employers were providing 350,000 people with job opportunities.  Germany should see Turks as a wealth, not a threat, Erdogan said. Erdogan also said countries should accept differences and learn to live together with them. Premier Erdogan is actually paying a formal visit to Germany. Erdogan will speak in a symposium in Berlin on the 50th anniversary of presence of Turks in Germany, and meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The meeting will be followed by a joint press conference.
