Turkish president criticizes Syrian army's operation

ANKARA (A.A) - August 1, 2011 - Turkey's president on Monday condemned operation of Syrian army against protestors in Syria. 
"As expectations are underway for restoration of tranquility in line with the spirit of Ramadan and for fulfillment of radical reforms, beginning the holy month of Ramadan within a bloody environment is unacceptable," President Abdullah Gul told A.A correspondent.
Gul said the recent events in Syria had further deepened the existing concerns. "I am calling on the Syrian administration to halt the violence against people and fulfill the reforms which will build future of the country on the basis of peace and stability," Gul said.
Gul said Turkey had been monitoring the developments in Syria from the intelligence sources.
"Recent developments in our neighboring country Syria have further deepened our concerns. The scenes of Sunday's incidents appalled all of us. Use of heavy weapons against people in Hama when the Ramadan began shocked me," Gul said.
"It is not possible for us to remain indifferent to this violence," Gul said.
Syrian army stormed Hama on Sunday to crush dissent in the eve of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. At least 100 people were killed in the attack with reported artillery and anti-aircraft fire.
