UAE expresses concern at political deterioration, spread of terrorism in Libya

GENEVA, 1st October, 2015 (WAM) -- The UAE has expressed serious concern at the worsening political crisis and spread of extremism and terrorism in Libya. It called on the international community to intensify efforts to stabilise the situation by backing the legitimate Libyan government in the face of criminal and terrorist gangs that are targeting the people of Libya and draining their nation's capabilities. The UAE said they even pose a security threat to neighbouring countries, including Arab nations and friendly African countries as well as the Mediterranean European countries. To tackle this extreme violence, the UAE has maintained that "it is essential for the international community to stand by the people of Libya, led by the elected Libyan parliament and the government so as to extend the sovereignty over the rest of the Libyan territory." This came in the UAE's speech before the 13th session of the Human Rights Council, delivered by Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations in Geneva, during the interactive dialogue on the human rights situation in Libya. Ambassador Al Zaabi welcomed at the beginning of his speech Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights and the representative of the United Nations Mission in Libya. He appreciated her report on the situation in Libya and the UN's efforts to assist the people of Libya to overcome this critical situation. He underscored that the UAE backs the efforts of UN special envoy to Libya to reach a durable peace and stability, calling on all parties to the crisis to take interest in restoring security and stability to sisterly Libya. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395286184848.html
