UAE partakes in 7th session of Arab Human Rights Commission in Cairo

CAIRO, 28th April, 2015 (WAM) -- The UAE is taking part in the 7th session of the Arab Human Rights Commission, which kicked off yesterday at the General Headquarters of the Arab League, to discuss the first report submitted by the Republic of Lebanon, on the human rights in Lebanon. The session is being chaired by Dr. Hadi al-Yami, head of the Commission, and attended by Khalid Zeyada, Lebanon's Permanent Representative to the Arab League, and its Ambassador to Egypt. Meanwhile, the UAE is represented by Advisor Abdul Rahim Yousef Al Awadi, Assistant Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, and Ali Al Shameli, an official in charge of Arab League Affairs at the UAE Embassy in Cairo. Ambassador Zeyada reviewed his country's human rights report and the decisive role played by the civil society organisations and other related bodies in tackling all aspects of human rights, adding that the legislation in Lebanon takes into account conflicts and catastrophes, noting that the civil society organisations play greater role in enacting and regulating laws concerning the disabled people. He stressed that the Arab Charter on Human Rights, which has been so far ratified by 14 Arab countries, "is a cornerstone of the Arab human rights system, which has gained a new impetus with the endorsement of the Arab Court of Human Rights statute in 2014, and proposal of the League of Arab States regarding a draft amendment to the Charter of origin in 1945, to cope with the challenges and developments that surround the Arab world. Zeyada noted that the draft amendment submitted to the Arab League Council during the 26th Arab Summit, held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in 2015, includes ensuring human rights and basic freedoms, respect for democratic principles and rule of law. – Emirates News Agency, WAM – http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395279807817.html
