UN chief says Cypriot leaders made limited progress in Greentree talks

UNITED NATIONS (A.A) - January 25, 2012 - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday said Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders had made limited progress in their two-day UN-brokered meetings in Greentree, New York. "Negotiations were strong and intensive but there was limited progress," Ban told a press conference following his trilateral meeting on Monday and Tuesday with Turkish Cypriot President Dervis Eroglu and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias to find a settlement to the division of the Eastern Mediterranean island. Ban said he strongly urged the two leaders to take decisive steps toward reaching a final agreement, adding that he also called them to make headway in the issues of election of the executive branch, properties and citizenship.   The UN chief said he could call for an international conference end of April or the beginning of May provided that his top adviser in Cyprus presented a "positive report."
