UN Secretary General commends Security Council resolution on Iran’s nuclear programme

UNITED NATIONS, July 20. /TASS/. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday commended the U.N. Security Council resolution on Iran’s nuclear programme and promised all possible assistance in its implementation. "The United Nations stands ready to provide whatever assistance is required in giving effect to the resolution," Ban said in a statement. He said that Resolution 2231 would make it possible to ensure the enforcement of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear programme that was adopted by Iran and the six international mediators (the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany) in Vienna last week. "The resolution provides for the eventual removal of all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran. It guarantees that the International Atomic Energy Agency will continue to verify Iran’s compliance with its nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA," the U.N. Secretary General said. Earlier on Monday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. According to the document, all international sanctions will be lifted from Iran in 10 years if Tehran fulfills all conditions agreed with the P5+1 group of international mediators in Vienna. The resolution also envisages easing sanctions against Iran after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) submits a report confirming Tehran’s compliance with the terms of the deal. The U.N. Security Council also reinforced the mechanism of returning all restrictions in case Iran violates the terms of the agreement. Read more
