UN Security Council under Azerbaijan’s presidency convenes open discussion on situation in Middle East

Baku, October 24 (AzerTAc). The United Nations Security Council held open discussions Tuesday under Azerbaijan`s presidency on the situation in the Middle East, including Palestine. Representatives of Israel, Palestine and member countries of the Council made their remarks. UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman briefed the Security Council on the last developments. Discussions revolved around the need for the parties to remain committed to peace talks, the fact that settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory contradicts international law, the UN`s efforts to convene a peace conference in Geneva in mid-November aimed at helping the Syrian sides launch a political process and establish by consent a new transitional governing body with full executive authority Speaking at the event, Azerbaijan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Security Council President Agshin Mehdiyev said the sides should be committed to the peace talks in order to achieve real results in the Middle East peace process. “This process should be carried out in accordance to the UN Charter and international law,” Mr Mehdiyev said. He drew the attention of the participants to the international support to bettering financial and humanitarian situation in Palestine.
