UN should play key role in resolving Iran nuclear issue, Zarif tells Ban

TEHRAN,Oct.5(MNA) – United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in New York on Wednesday. It was their third meeting in two weeks on the sidelines of the 68th session of the UN General Assembly. According to a UN press release, Ban welcomed the generally favorable impressions and messages that had been conveyed in recent days. He briefed the Iranian foreign minister on the speedy deployment of the joint United Nations Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons mission to Syria on chemical weapons. He urged parties to come to Geneva for the international peace conference, accepting the communiqué of June 30, 2012 as the basis for the conference. He underlined the importance of a single and united delegation on the opposition side. The secretary general and the minister also discussed the talks on Iran’s nuclear program. Zarif said the UN is expected to play a key role in resolving the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program. The Iranian foreign minister said inappropriate political remarks should not be allowed to disrupt the process of settling the issue. Commenting on the crisis in Syria, Zarif expressed Iran’s readiness to help find a political solution to the situation in the Arab country.
