UNHCR Envoy Hails Iran Measures To Support Refugees

Tehran, May 19, IRNA – Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Bernard De Ville hailed Iran’s measures to protect and support foreign refugees as well as Afghan and Iraqi emigrants. Talking to IRNA on Sunday, he outlined the activities of his organization. He said the UNHCR has been in Iran for a quarter of a century now, stressing that the organization is aimed at supporting the Iranian government for its efforts to protect the refugees living in the country. Noting that his organization mainly tries to render services to refugees coming from Iraq and Afghanistan, he said over 880,000 refugees from the two countries are presently living in Iran. The Islamic Republic of Iran, due to its security and economic stability, stands in the first place in the region for receiving migrants fleeing their war-torn countries, the UNHCR envoy reiterated./end
