Upper houses of Russian, Brazilian parliaments agree on cooperation

BRASILIA, November 10. /TASS/. Upper parliament houses of Russia and Brazil signed on Tuesday an agreement on inter-parliamentary cooperation. The document was signed by both houses seakers, Valentina Matviyeko of Russia’s Federation Council, and Renan Calheiros of Brazil’s Federal Senate. "The sides have agreed to fill the document with absolutely concrete content both in the bilateral format and in the format of parliamentary cooperation within the BRICS (an association of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)," Matviyenko said after the signing. Calheiros, in turn, said the sides had discussed issue of the legal framework between the two countries and prospects for establishing closer economic cooperation between Russia and Brazil. After the meeting, the Russian speaker noted that parliamentarians "are not only speaking a common language but are thinking in the same way." "The Russian-Brazilian relations have been developing rather rapidly and very efficiently in the recent time. That is why the two countries’ parliaments are playing an ever growing role in backing cooperation between the states in various spheres," Matviyenko said, adding that the Russian lawmakers had had a chance to see sincere interest of their Brazilian counterparts in developing inter-parliamentary relations. Earlier on Tuesday, Matviyenko met with lawmakers from the Brazilian National Congress’ lower house, the Chamber of Deputies. At a meeting with the house’s speaker Eduardo Cunha, they discussed measures to promote parliamentary cooperation within the BRICS. Matviyenko said her vis-à-vis had taken the idea enthusiastically. In her words, the Brazilian lawmaker had highly assessed the first parliamentary forum of the BRICS countries held in Moscow in 2015. She said Cunho had called to develop various formats of cooperation to ensure better implementation of agreements reached by BRICS leaders. "In general, Brazil actively supports development of this integration association and hips big hopes on it in terms of development of the national economy and expansion of economic and scientific cooperation with these countries," the Russia upper house speaker said.
