U.S ambassador comments on pre-election situation in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, September 5 /Trend, I.Izzet/ The U.S. wants Azerbaijan to hold a fair presidential election, U.S ambassador Richard Morningstar told journalists on Thursday commenting on the pre-election process in Azerbaijan. Morningstar expressed his hope that every Azerbaijani citizen will vote for whom he wants to see as president using his voting right. "On August 5 we made an appeal about how this should be a free and fair election. We also adhere to this view today," Morningstar stressed. According to the ambassador a diplomat of one or another country cannot support or speak against nominated candidates. "When coming to the meeting with the opposition representatives, I suppose that a diplomat can meet and talk with all candidates. At the same time it is very necessary that he would not support and speak against one or another candidate as this should be only the decision of Azerbaijani nation," Morningstar said. Presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on October 9. Previous presidential elections were held on October 15, 2008. The presidential elections in Azerbaijan are held every five years.
