U.S. congressmen eulogize late founder Turkish Cypriot president

WASHINGTON (A.A) - February 8, 2012 - U.S. congressmen eulogized on Tuesday late founder president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Ed Whitfield and Ed Towns praised and voiced their respect to Rauf Denktas during their speeches at the U.S. House of Representatives, which were recorded in the Congress registers. Co-chair of Congressional Turkey Caucus, Ed Whitfield, said Denktas spent most of his life on solving Cyprus problem. Whitfield expressed hope that international community could proceed towards a lasting settlement acceptable by both parties in Cyprus, which could reflect Rauf Denktas' efforts. A member of the Congressional Turkey Caucus, Ed Towns, said both parties continued to live peacefully despite decades long tension between Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot peoples. Ed Towns said Denktas had been an efficient leader and spokesperson of Turkish Cypriots. Both congressmen expressed their condolences to Denktas' family, Turkish Cypriot people and Turkish community living in the United States. Speeches that are recorded in the Congress registers are considered historical documents, and seen as secondary legal source.
