U.S. is main violator of religious rights: Iran

TEHRAN,Aug.2(MNA)– The Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the growing trend of Islamophobia, systemic discrimination against Muslims and restriction on religious minorities’ freedom in the U.S. have made the country the main violator of religious rights. The response came in reaction to the U.S. State Department’s report in which it was claimed that in Iran officials threatened, detained, and harassed members of almost all non-Shia religious groups. “Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Sudan put severe restrictions on members of religious groups that did not conform to the state-approved religion(s),” the Statement Department said in its 2013 report. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said the United States’ full support for the Zionist regime’s recent acts in the Gaza Strip has left no “credibility” for Washington to judge other countries’ religious rights and freedoms. She said Iran’s constitution respects all divine religions and their freedom in observing their rituals and ceremonies. She went on to say that such reports which lack “validity” are simply used as tools to exert pressure on other countries.
