US won’t boycott Thailand on human trafficking issue: Thai Foreign Minister

BANGKOK, Oct 15 (TNA) -- Despite Thailand remains in the Tier 3 category of countries with the worst human trafficking charges, the United States will not boycott Thailand after its deadline expires in 90 days, said Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai on Thursday. Mr Don’s remarks were made following his meeting with newly appointed US ambassador to Thailand Glyn T Davies at the ministry headquarters. Mr Don said he had briefed Mr Davies several issues during the meeting, especially on the Thai government’s roadmap for national reform and its attempt to restore democracy in the country by organising a general election. But the most important issue presently is to furnish the draft constitution along with the national reform, he told Mr Davies. Mr Don said relations between the US and Thailand are now still normal and both countries are still good friends while the 5th meeting on strategic partner between Thailand- US will be held this December in which Daniel Russel, assistant secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, would attend. Another discussion on Thai-US military strategic relations will be held in Hawaii, said Mr Don. Touching on the headway to solve human trafficking problem in Thailand which Washington on July 27 kept the kingdom on its Tier 3 list, Mr Don said the US has assured that it would not boycott Thailand after 90 days and that the US is willing to help solve the issue. Mr Davies told journalists that he would officially call on Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha soon. (TNA)
