Vietnam Spoke About Extradition Treaty, South China Sea In Bilateral Meeting - Malaysian PM

From M. Saraswathi MANILA, Nov 19 (Bernama) –- Vietnam has suggested that Hanoi and Putrajaya sign an extradition treaty, said Malaysian Prime MinisterNajib Razak. He said this was put forward to him by Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit here. “This is up to our Attorney-General’s Chambers to discuss with its counterpart in Vietnam as there are many aspects to extradition," he said. Extradition is the official process whereby one country transfers a suspected or convicted criminal to another country. Between countries, extradition is normally regulated by treaties. Besides this, there were also discussions on maritime issues, including the territorial disputes in the South China Sea, he said. He said Vietnam also suggested that both countries sign a memorandum of understanding on rice trade. Vietnam is the second largest rice exporter in the world. On other developments, Najib said he also had discussions with the Chief Executive Officer of Sanofi Pasteur, Olivier Charmeil, on the company’s new model for the rollout of a dengue vaccine. He said the company hoped that the Ministry of Health and the relevant authorities can approve its usage in Malaysia. -- BERNAMA
