WAVE Act 1st Step Towards Global Fight Against Extremism: Khazaei

New York, Dec 24, IRNA – President Hassan rouhanis proposal against violence and extremism which was approved as a UN resolution is the first step towards global fight againt violence and extremism, senior Iranian diplomat said on Monday. Speaking to IRNA, Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Mohammad Khazaei said adoption of the WAVE Act has created a new atmosphere for fighting against extremism at the international arena. On December 18, President Rouhani’s World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) proposal was ratified at the UN General Assembly with 190 positive votes. The WAVE Act calls on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism. The Iranian President made the proposal in an address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25. Iran's WAVE Act urges UN member states to take “appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.” According to the act, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has to provide a report by the end of the 2015 on the latest measures which would be made until then by the world body to implement the WAVE resolution. Khazaei also criticized world major powers hypocritical manner towards extremism based on which they condemn violence and extremism, on the one hand and support terrorist groups covertly or overtly on the other./end
