West Cannot Make Iran Bow To Pressures: Professor

London, July 2, IRNA – A professor of London’s Imperial College, Abbas Edalat, said that the West and the US cannot make the Islamic Republic of Iran to bow to the pressures by pursuing the policies of sanctions and threats. Professor Edalat made the remarks during a speech at the venue of London University Students Islamic Association on the occasion of negotiations held between Iran and the Group 5+1 (five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) and also imposing new round of sanctions by the US and the European Union (EU) on Iran. “The main objective of the US is to bring about a regime change in Iran and the nuclear issue is only a pretext for fulfilling this objective,” he added. Referring to US’ hostile attitude vis-à-vis the Islamic Republic of Iran over past three decades, Edalat said that the US politicians (both Republicans and Democrats) since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran have been pursuing to make IR Iran to bow to pressures and bring about a regime change in the country. “In fact, the main goal of the US is presently to change the status quo in Iran in order to achieve its ultimate goal which is regime change,” he added. Edalat pointed out that the US cannot launch military strikes on Iran at this moment and it is only taking its time. “The main strategy of the US is to prevent a hike in the oil prices and also intensified military tensions due to its inability to launch military strikes on Iran,” he added. Edalat noted that the West, including the US hope that in the long-run the sanctions would frustrate the Iranians and make them quit supporting the Islamic system. “For the same reason, both the US and Israel are doing their best to prevent suspension of anti-Iran sanctions under all circumstances,” he added./end
