Wife of US Vice President visits GWU

ABU DHABI, 8th March, 2016 (WAM) – Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of US Vice President, Joe Biden, who is currently visiting the country, visited the General Women's Union (GWU) this morning. She and her accompanying delegation were received by Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Director of the GWU, Dr. Maha Taysir Barakat, Director-General of the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi, Reem Al Falasi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, Amal Mohammed Al Kous, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for School Activities and Environment, and Dr. Mouza Al Shehhi, Chief Executive of Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy. While visiting the GWU, Dr. Biden was briefed about the national strategy of the union. She and her accompanying delegation also acquainted themselves with the union's work and its major achievements in the field of women empowerment. The visitors were briefed about the efforts of the GWU on women's empowerment in the areas of political participation and strengthening the role of Arab women parliamentarians, thanks to the guidance and directives of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, for her keenness on advancing the cause of women in the UAE to the prestigious position that meets the strategy of the union and aspirations of the wise leadership. Dr. Biden expressed her admiration for those who preserve a country’s heritage, while watching a live demonstration of one such example. It gave a boost to handicraft made by Emirati women and reflected the UAE’s heritage on the domestic and international stage. She also visited Al Jawhara hall, where she viewed the local, Arab and international awards received by Sheikha Fatima in recognition to her humanitarian and cultural roles as well as her tireless efforts to advance the cause of women.
