Will US “hijack” Russia’s victory in Syria?

Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 30 By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend: Combined efforts of the United States and Russia to completely eliminate the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS) in Syria is, of course, very important to settle the Syrian crisis, the major “players” in which are Moscow, Washington, Ankara, Riyadh and Tehran. But this at the same time doesn’t at all mean that Syria is on the verge of stability. There is no doubt that an agreement between the US and Russia to eliminate the terrorists in Syria will lead to an extensive influx of violent jihadists to both Syria and Iraq. Such an agreement is another chance for the radicals “to earn paradise”. It is worth noting that the clash of interests of Iran and Saudi Arabia in Syria has already caused the conflict to be perceived as a Shiite-Sunni conflict. In short, the interested parties have been able to make the political crisis in Syria, as well as in Iraq, turn into an interfaith conflict. Here it should also be noted that the anti-IS coalition forces, led by the US, despite all the efforts have not been able to achieve significant results in eliminating the terrorists. However, the United States said earlier that as a result of operations against the IS, the terrorists lost 25 percent of the territories, which they were previously controlled. But the US reports have no information about who currently controls the “liberated” lands. It is clear that, in contrast to the coalition forces, Russia stands ready for a decisive fight against the “caliphate”. It is also important to mention that while the US undertook the role of a leader in the fight against the IS, Russia, Syria, Iraq and Iran have created a joint information center in Baghdad for fighting the terrorist organization. This was a signal to the US. Washington understands that Russia is committed to definitely fight against terrorism. After Moscow gains a landslide victory over terrorism in Syria, it will win laurels, which is absolutely unacceptable for the US. Proceeding from this, the US and Russia agreed on the "fundamental principles" of the Syrian crisis settlement. US Secretary of State John Kerry has recently said that Moscow and Washington failed to agree on the result of a change of power in Syria. Kerry also said that he must again meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday and continue the discussions, the Russian media wrote. President Assad’s status in Syria is still the main difference between the US and Russia. The US, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and a number of Western countries, stand for Bashar Assad's quitting the Syrian political life as opposed to Russia and Iran. Iranian and Russian support for President Assad testifies to the fact that Moscow and Tehran do not have an alternative politician in this country if Assad quits politics. At present, the US, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia do not have any alternative for the post of the Syrian president either. The Syrian opposition has many differences. One can say that there is no political opposition in Syria. The reason is the lack of a normal political sphere during the reign of Bashar al-Assad. There is no doubt that Russia's active participation in the fight against militants in Syria sooner or later will lead to the physical destruction of IS. But this will not solve the political chaos that is now veiled amid the military operations.
