Zarif en-route to NY for NPT conf., N-talks

TEHRAN, Apr. 26 (MNA) – Iran’s FM Zarif accompanied by nuclear negotiators has left for New York this morning to attend the NPT conference and hold nuclear talks with American counterpart. Participating at the ninth review conference for the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in New York on April 27 is the priority plan of Foreign Minister Zarif during his stay there, but on the sidelines he will also hold meetings with US Secretary of State John Kerry and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, as well as a number of the 5+1 group ministers. The 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will be held from 27 April to 22 May 2015 at UN Headquarters in New York. Conferences to review the operation of the Treaty have been held at five-year intervals since the Treaty went into effect in 1970. Each conference has sought to find agreement on a final declaration that would assess the implementation of the Treaty’s provisions. Mohammad Javad Zarif is scheduled to give a speech at the NPT review conference. Given Iran’s presidency status of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Zarif’s speech has gained even more significance. Iran and the 5+1 group started drafting the text of mechanisms related to the removal of sanctions imposed on Tehran over its peaceful nuclear program on April 22-24 in Vienna. The talks and the process of drafting a final nuclear accord will resume on the sidelines of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference in New York on April 27. The nuclear negotiations in New York will be at the expert and deputy levels, postponed to take place at the end of the week due to a heavy schedule and the significance of Iran’s attendance at NPT conference. Iran’s and US foreign ministers will meet on Monday to discuss the process of nuclear negotiations.
