Zarif: Terrorism Threatens Regional Security, Stability

Tehran, Oct 27, IRNA – Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif said on Saturday that terrorism threatens security and stability of the region. In a meeting with the UN Special Envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, Zarif said that terrorism in Syria has jeopardized security and stability of the entire region. Zarif said Iran is endeavoring to help settle the Syria crisis through a diplomatic means and the Syrian-Syrian dialog on the grounds of the Islamic and humanitarian values and bolstering stability and security in the region. He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is exercising policies with a commitment to peace and security in the Middle East. “Iran believes that stability and security in the region needs constructive cooperation among regional states themselves.” He made it clear that Iran supports any initiative to help settle Syria crisis with respect to the role of the Syrian people by using all its capacity. Zarif lauded Brahimi for good record of peace efforts in the region citing the Afghan crisis, through active contribution and cooperation of Iran, and wished success for his mission on Syria. Brahimi for his part thanked Iranian mediation efforts to help settle the regional issues, especially the Syrian crisis. Brahimi said that only a political approach can help end bloodshed in Syria calling for cooperation of all influential countries and parties in the region. “I hope that through constructive contribution, cooperation and engagement of all influential countries and parties we would witness timely holding of the Geneva 2 conference.”/end
