MOSCOW, March 2. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Vo Van Thuong with elections as the President of Vietnam and noted that Russian-Vietnamese relations are built upon traditions of friendship and mutual respect in a congratulatory telegram, published on the Kremlin’s website Thursday.

"The relations between our countries are based on good traditions of friendship and mutual respect. I expect that your activities as the head of state would contribute to further strengthening of the Russian-Vietnamese comprehensive strategic partnership," the head of state noted.

Putin also underscored that the development of ties between Russia and Vietnam meet basic interests of the people of both countries and "follows the course towards ensuring security and stability in the Asia Pacific Region."

Earlier on Thursday, the National Assembly (a unicameral parliament) of the Social Republic of Vietnam elected Vo Van Thuong, member of the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee and Politburo, as the country’s new president.
