Azerbaijan`s Western University marks World Cancer Day

Baku, March 2 (AzerTAc). An event to mark the World Cancer Day and 8 March, International Women`s Day (IWD ) was held in the Western University on Thursday. The event was organized by the Western University, the United Nations Department of Public Information, UNDPI Azerbaijan, the World Health Organization`s (WHO) office in the country. Fikrat Alizade, head of the Gender Researches Center Under the Western University updated participants on the body`s activity and significance of the projects on the gender problems. UN DPI representative in Azerbaijan Envera Selimovich provided information on the establishment of UN Movie and Debate Club and different projects carrying out by the club. National expert of the WHO office in Azerbaijan Sevil Asadova spoke of the cancer disease, day of struggle against cancer and its prevention, detection, and treatment. “Each year on 4 February, World Cancer Day, WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) support the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) to promote ways to ease the global burden of cancer. "Together it is possible" is the 2012 theme for World Cancer Day, reinforcing that it is only by every person, organization, and government individually doing their part that the world will be able to reduce premature deaths from cancer and other noncommunicable diseases. Preventing cancer, improving treatment and raising quality of life for cancer patients are recurring themes. This year, WHO and IARC will focus on screening and vaccination,” she added. A documentary on struggle against cancer was demonstrated at the event.
