Five Malaysian Young Scientists To Join Lindau Meeting

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Five young scientists have been selected to represent Malaysia at the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Interdisciplinary Meeting to be held in Lindau, Germany next month. Academy of Science Malaysia (ASM) vice-president Professor Dr Asma Ismail said they comprised four lecturers and a researcher from four public universities. They are Dr Chin Kok Yong from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University, Malaysia-UKM); Dr Amirah Abdul Latif (University Putra Malaysia - UPM), Dr Haslina Ahmad (UPM), Dr Oon Chern Ein (Science University, Malaysia - USM), and Liew Peng Yen (Researcher at Technology University, Malaysia - UTM). "They were selected from among 25 applicants nationwide," she told reporters Friday. She said the Lindau meeting offered young researchers opportunities for an informal get-together with several Nobel laureates from science discipline winners. Dr Asma said apart from that, three other young Malaysian scientists had been selected to join the 2015 European Organisation for Nuclear Research Summer Student Programme from June to August in Geneva, Switzerland. They are Nur Zulaiha Jomhari (University Malaya - UM), Muhammad Khairul Adib Muhammad Yusof (UPM) and Wong Wei Wen (Multimedia University). Meanwhile, UTM's Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student Tan Sie Ting will join the 2015 International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Young Scientist Summer Programme (YSSP) from June to August in Vienna, Austria. Dr Asma hoped all the nine Malaysian young scientists who would join three different programmes abroad would become idols in future to bring more changes in the local science industry. ASM has called on institutions of higher learning, research institutes, relevant government ministries and agencies to partner with the academy and provide requisite financial support for participation of the nine young scientists. Malaysia has so far, sent 52 young scientists to participate in the Lindau meeting since 2004. -- BERNAMA
