Iran Among Top 10 Countries In Orthopedics

Tehran, Nov 1, IRNA - Iran ranks among the top 10 countries in orthopedics, said Dr. Gholamali Akasheh, the head of the Iranian Orthopedic Surgeons Association. Akasheh made the statement in an exclusive interview with 'Iran Daily' published Saturday, adding that Iranian surgeons perform high quality orthopedic surgeries at prices which are more affordable than those in other nations. Many patients come to Iran from countries such as Azerbaijan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar and Persian Gulf littoral states for orthopedic surgeries, he said. Iran boasts good and state-of-the-art orthopedic equipments and facilities, he added. He noted the orthopedic services which are most in demand in Iran pertain to knee surgeries and treatment of bone fractures. “In terms of medical knowledge and experience, Iran’s standing is quite high. We are at par with countries such as US, UK, France, Japan and Germany in this field.” He attributed the joint diseases to knee arthritis, weight gain, and failure to observe healthy nutrition, noting that joint diseases occur in old age. Many people who suffer from joint disease do not go for joint replacements and do not undergo treatment, he added. He said Iranian Orthopedic Surgeons Association was established in 1973. It is one of the oldest associations in the country. It expanded after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Currently, all orthopedists (numbering 850) are members of the association, he concluded./end
