Tehran, April 16, IRNA - Iran is among the forerunners in heart transplantion operations across the region, said the head of the Cardiovascular Ward of Masih Daneshvari Hospital. In an exclusive interview with the English-language newspaper ˈIran Dailyˈ published Wednesday, Dr.Babak Sharif Kashani added that Imam Khomeini Hospital, Shariati Hospital and Masih Daneshvari Hospital are the main centers which conduct cardiac transplantation operations. He noted that they can compete with many advanced hospitals worldwide. Also, two medical centers in Shiraz (Fars province) and Mashhad (Khorasan Razavi province) perform heart transplantation operations, Kashani said, noting that around 70 heart transplantations are performed in Iran each year. Majority of heart transplantations are conducted in US and European nations, Kashani noted, adding that in the region, heart transplantations ares conducted in Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Currently, artificial hearts are not manufactured within the country and have to be imported, he said, noting that unjust sanctions are creating impediments.
