More Than 2,000 Malaysian Men Contract Lung Cancer Annually - Minister

SERDANG (Selangor, Malaysia), Aug 20 (Bernama) -- More than 2,000 Malaysian men are diagnosed with lung cancer yearly, making the disease man's number one enemy in the country, says Deputy Health Minister Dr Hilmi Yahya. He said two other cancerous diseases which often afflicted men were colon cancer and cancer of the nose and throat. "The number one cancer for women is breast cancer followed by cervical cancer and lung cancer," he told reporters after officiating the gathering of the Malaysian Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulomonoly (MABIP) here, Wednesday. According to Dr Hilmi, concern over the risk of lung infection could no longer be related merely with lifestyle including smoking, as it was also influenced by surroundings. Meanwhile, MABIP chairman Dr Jamalul Azizi Abdul Rahaman said lung diseases including acute asthma, no longer requires patients to seek treatment abroad, as the procedure is available locally. He said treatment was being provided at Serdang Hospital, with potential for cure at 80 per cent. He said, via the use of the latest technology, every procedure conducted by the pulmonologist could reduce risk and complication to patients as it did not involve a major operation. On the cost of treatment, Dr Jamalul Azizi said the cost for the procedure is US$6,572 (RM27,000). "Every patient must buy three special tubes for the thermoplasty procedure, namely, heat treatment, whereby each tube costs US$2,190 (RM9,000). Although pricey, they are cost effective," he said. Dr Jamalul Azizi said 11 patients had been successfully treated since MABIP was registered in 2013 and based at the local hospital of Serdang Hospital. --BERNAMA
