OIC, IDB & Guinea Joint Committee To Study Priorities For Ebola Intervention

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the Government of Guinea have formed a joint committee to study priorities for rapid intervention after the Ebola virus outbreak. In a statement, the OIC said the committee, which was launched during a meeting between OIC General Secretary Iyad Ameen Madani, IDB President Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali and a delegation from Guinea, would seek to rehabilitate the community, as well as sustainable development affected by the virus outbreak. At the meeting held at the OIC General Secretariat headquarters in Jeddah on Sunday, Guinea was represented by its international cooperation; health; and, education and planning ministers. “The Guinea delegation was also briefed on the road map for future action, and the confirmed support of OIC, IDB and Member States for Guinea and Sierra Leone, which are affected by the Ebola disease,” it said. The meeting also reviewed prior joint conference organised by OIC and IDB on Nov 6, which involved non-governmental charitable organisations and the affected countries to join in efforts to fight Ebola. The OIC and IDB have previously announced an urgent financial aid for affected countries, apart from material resources, equipment and supplies, as well as trained health workers. To mobilise support for the affected countries, a meeting of OIC member states was held in Geneva on Sept 29, followed by the Resource Mobilisation Conference in Jeddah. According to the World Health Organisation, Ebola has killed 4,960 people since it broke out in West Africa earlier this year, and the bulk of the cases and deaths were in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. --BERNAMA
